Philanthropy Ireland welcomes Irish Government Initiative in relation to Philanthropy

Minister Pat Carey last night launched a new Government initiative to support philanthropy in Ireland. 

This initiative builds on the work of the Forum on Philanthropy which was established by Government in late 2006 with the aim of developing new measures to encourage philanthropy in Ireland, by creating a more supportive environment for planned giving. Dame Stephanie Shirley, the UK’s Ambassador on Philanthropy was guest speaker at the launch.

Philanthropy Ireland welcomes the publication of the report “An assessment of the current state and future potential of philanthropic giving in the Republic of Ireland”  by McKinsely and Company.

Mr. John R. Healy, Chairman of Philanthropy Ireland spoke at the launch of the new Government initiative in relation to philanthropy which took place in Government Buildings. Mr Healy welcomed the Government’s 5 point initiative in relation to philanthropy. He called on the Government to review the taxation of charitable donations in advance of the 2011 Budget and in particular, to decouple philanthropic donations from other tax reliefs to help promote increased charitable giving,
