Following the very successful series of four half-day training courses ran by Philanthropy Ireland in November, we are delivering a one-day course on grant-making fundamentals, with a focus on grant assessment.
The course is open to staff or trustees from organisations both in the independent and statutory sector with grant programmes. Attendance is limited to 18 participants.
The trainer, Heather Swailes has worked at the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the UK National Lottery Charities Board and she currently works as Executive Secretary of the Allen Lane Foundation. Heather has delivered training courses for the Association of Charitable Foundations (UK) for many years.
Course outline: Fundamentals of Grantmaking & Assessment
This course is for staff and trustees of grant-making organisations (both independent and state-funded) who are involved in the assessment of grant applications, and who would like to develop their techniques in assessing grant applications. At the end of the course participants should be able to:
* identify whether an application meets the criteria of the relevant fund
* distinguish personal opinion from criteria-based judgements
* discover more information from applicants in a thorough but respectful manner
* reflect on the relationship between grant-seeker and grant-maker
* reflect on their own role and that of the Trustees/Board
* present applications to Trustees/Board to enable them to make proper decisions
